As you look at the things around you it is easy to see many of their physical properties such as color, shape, and size. Some properties of a substance are not as obvious unless the substance has changed composition as a result of a chemical reaction. A chemical property is the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances.

One of the chemical properties of iron is that is forms rust when exposed to oxygen. This is why a bicycle gets old and messy with the years, it stars to descompose.

Physical matter is the one we may feel by ourselves. The “stuff” around us : Rocks, houses, water, air, people, ants, trees, etc. All matter can exist as a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Matter includes all the things we can weigh (to find the mass) and measure to find the volume (because they take up space)

Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the substance.

An example is odor. When you smell water or isopropyl alcohol, neither of these substances changes into something else. They remain water and isopropyl alcohol
